Adopt-a-Drain: Protect Your Waterways and Community
Join the Adopt-a-Drain initiative to help protect our rivers, lakes, creeks, and Puget Sound. By adopting a storm drain in your neighborhood, you can prevent flooding and reduce pollution.
Why Adopt a Storm Drain?
Storm drains funnel excess rainwater directly to our waterways, carrying along pollutants like trash and leaves. Keeping these drains clear of leaves, trash, and debris helps prevent local flooding and keeps our water clean. Auburn is part of the Washington Adopt-a-Drain (AAD) program, leading regional efforts to protect the Puget Sound.
How to Adopt a Drain:
Adopting a storm drain is easy! Simply volunteer 15 minutes, twice a month to keep your drain clear. You can participate as an individual, family, business, or organization.
- Sign Up Online: Visit adopt-a-drain.org to select and adopt your storm drain (or two!)
- Get Your Materials: You will receive a packet in the mail with a yard sign showing which water body you are protecting and instructions on how you can keep the drain clear.
Keep It Clean: Sweep leaves, trash, and other debris off the drain surface regularly.
- Track Your Impact: Log your debris collection in your online account to help track community-wide impact.
Safety Guidelines:
- Children should always have adult supervision.
- Only clean the grate surface and around the drain, don’t remove the grate.
- Stand on the curb, not in the street.
- Use gloves and tools like a broom, rake, or dustpan—never touch debris with your bare hands.
- Dispose of waste properly by separating trash, recyclables, and compostables.
Reporting a Clogged Drain:
If a drain remains clogged after cleaning the surface, report it to the City of Auburn using the SeeClickFix app or website.
Make a Bigger Impact:
- Share Your Effort: Tell others about your commitment to help prevent water pollution.
- Track Your Results: Log the amount of debris you collect twice a year to measure your impact and contribute to the community’s efforts.
Let’s work together for cleaner waterways and a healthier community!
